Writing happens every where. It does not need to be forced, prodded, pushed, or imposed. Writing is symbolic. And just like in pretend play, if your child can assign a symbolic meaning to an object (ex. using a block as a cell phone), they can assign a symbolic meaning to a letter, and then to a word, and then to a sentence, etc. This is why pretend play is SO important in early childhood. Representational thought leads directly to early literacy… no worksheets needed. Let the children PLAY!
